Yan, Hunt, Sheng, and Szlavnics ( 2000) developed GGE (genotypic main effect plus GE) biplot analysis, one of the utilities being to graphically show the which-won-where pattern.

Gauch and Zobel ( 1997) developed AMMI (additive main effect and multiplicative interaction) charts to show the “which-won-where” pattern of a genotype × environment dataset and used the “which-won-where” pattern as a basis to divide a target region into MEs. However, ME analysis specific to a crop kind is most relevant to its breeding and production. There have been numerous approaches to divide an administrative region, such as a country or a province, into subregions, areas, or zones. The analytic process to divide a target region into MEs for a crop kind is referred to as ME analysis. These two approaches may better be regarded as two steps of a single approach-that is, to breed ME-specific cultivars. The other is to accommodate nonrepeatable GE by testing adequately and selecting for high mean yield and high stability within a ME (Yan, 2016). Repeatable GE can be used by breeding ME-specific cultivars. One is to identify repeatable GE and thereby to divide a target region into meaningful mega-environments (MEs). There are two approaches to dealing with GE. Genotype × environment interaction (GE) has been a challenge to plant breeding.

Western Cooperative Oat Registration Test.genotype plus genotype × location interaction.genotypic main effect plus genotype × environment interaction.Brandon Research and Development Center. The results suggest that oat variety trials should be conducted and cultivar recommendation be made according to MEs, as opposed to by administrative regions that are currently in place. Latitude was shown to be the main factor for the ME differentiation. In addition, two sub-MEs existed within ME2. avenae Eriks.) prone regions in southern and eastern Ontario (ME1), other regions in eastern Canada (ME2), and the Canadian Prairies (ME3). Analysis showed that the oat growing regions in Canada can be divided into three MEs: the crown rust ( Puccinia coronata Corda f. This study applied LG (location-grouping) biplot analysis to several datasets from multiyear oat ( Avena sativa L.) variety trials conducted at locations across Canada. Repeatable GE can be used by dividing the target region into mega-environments (MEs) and breeding ME-specific cultivars, and unrepeatable GE must be accommodated by testing adequately within a ME. Dealing with GE starts with differentiation of repeatable GE from unrepeatable GE in a target region. Genotype × environment interaction (GE) is a perennial problem in plant breeding and must be dealt with.
